Schools no longer construct flat roofs as they have traditionally, as sloping roofs prevent leaks from occurring.  The sloping roofs on our new high school drain toward the interior of the building, where the water is efficiently collected via roof drains and conducted to the underground storm water system.  This design is not just appealing to the eye, but it permits a great deal of natural light penetration, which is proven to enhance student learning as well as being energy efficient and environmentally friendly.  To slope the roofs outward would have eliminated the benefit of additional light penetration, and would have required gutters, downspouts and snow guards of a size that would be costly to install and maintain and that would have detracted from the building's appearance.

The steel beams will be coated with a fireproof spray.  If they were primed first, the fireproof spray would not adhere.

The typical classroom in the new high school will be 800 square feet (26'8" x 30'0").  This is roughly the same size as the typical classrooms in the newest (1978) wing of the existing high school, and larger than classrooms in the older part of the building, which range from 650 to 750 square feet.
